Have
you ever thought of making a roof garden?
Transform your rooftop into a beautiful garden where you can
entertain, dine, or just relax and enjoy the view. Green roofs not
only add a magnificent living environment to your home but can also
lower your energy costs and increase its resale value. You can even
have an high-tech rooftop garden and outdoor space that can include
architectural details such as waterfalls, ponds, greenhouses,
rock-gardens and gazebos.
A green
roof is a plant-covered roof cover, with growing, live flora taking
the place of bare membrane, gravel, shingles or tiles. Green roofs
are a healthy alternative to traditional roofs and provide a number
of benefits over conventional roofing, including a longer lifetime
as a roof. The roofs save on heating and cooling costs, and provide
a better sound barrier than conventional roofs. They also help
reduce our CO2 emissions.
Green
roofs are obviously installed differently than conventional roofs,
and require more maintenance. The number and type of roofing layers
vary from roof to roof, but all green roofs include a waterproofing
layer, draining, soil and other growing media, and the plants and
trees. Theoretically, any roof surface can be greened - even sloped
or curved roofs can support a layer of sod or wildflowers.
Switzerland has just passed a bylaw which states that new buildings
must be designed to relocate the green space covered by the
building's footprint to their roofs - even existing buildings
-including historical buildings - must now green 20% of their
rooftops.
